Action Alert

Stop Congress from Expanding Wildlife Killing on Public Lands-

Contact Your Senators Today!

Please join Project Coyote, Animal Welfare Institute, Sierra Club, National Parks Conservation Association, Defenders of Wildlife, HSUS and countless other organizations in opposing H.R. 4089- the so-called "Sportsmen's Heritage Act of 2012" (more appropriately the "Wildlife Killing Act of 2012").

This highly controversial bill would be devastating for wildlife and the environment. Among other provisions, this legislation seeks to:

  • Open nearly all of our public lands- including National Wildlife Refuges and National Parks- to recreational hunting without regard to the impact on wildlife and other resources;
  • Expand trapping of coyotes, wolves, and other wild animals for their fur-- on our public lands!;
  • Strip the EPA of its authority to protect habitat, animals, and people from lead poisoning through toxic ammunition exposure;
  • Allow trophy hunters to import polar bear trophies (killed before May 15, 2008 - the date when polar bears were designated as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act) from Canada in defiance of current law.
H.R. 4089 has already passed the House; it is being expedited through Congress by a powerful lobby including the NRA and the U.S. Sportsman's Alliance. We must unite to make our voices heard NOW by urging our Senators to oppose this bill.

ACT NOW - Please make a brief, polite phone call to both of your U.S. Senators, urging opposition to H.R. 4089. Look up your Senators here.

We cannot do this without you- please pick up the phone today!

Talking points:
"My name is X and I live in X. As your constituent, I urge you protect human health, wildlife, and public lands by voting against H.R. 4089 - or any similar bill. If passed, this unconscionable legislation would:

  • expand recreational hunting and trapping on public lands including National Wildlife Refuges and National Parks;
  • undo critical protection for polar bears;
  • strip the EPA of its authority to protect people, animals, and the environment from poisoning through toxic lead ammunition exposure."

Please send a follow-up note by email or fax to your two U.S. Senators (via the same website). Please personalize and use your own words.

SUBJECT: Please Oppose H.R. 4089

Dear Senator,

I urge you to oppose H.R. 4089- an outrageously cruel and wasteful bill that would be devastating for wildlife and the environment. This dangerous legislation would rollback gains made for wildlife conservation over the last forty years.

H.R. 4089 would mandate recreational hunting on almost all federal lands including National Parks where hunting has long been prohibited. In addition, this reckless bill would expand fur trapping of wildlife - even on National Wildlife Refuges! Hunters and trappers already have millions of acres of public lands to conduct their activities. Wildlife watchers annually contribute about twice as much to the U.S. economy as hunters and trappers, according to U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service statistics.

H.R. 4089 also strips the EPA of its ability to protect people, animals, and the environment from poisoning by exposure to toxic lead ammunition.

H.R. 4089 will cost American taxpayers millions. Congress should not waste its time and our money on this outrageous legislation.

Please oppose H.R. 4089 or any similar harmful legislation and help protect wildlife, habitat, and the public.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
