We are pleased to report that the bill to prohibit cruel and indiscriminate traps and poisons on New Mexico Public Lands, HB 366, overcame its first hurdle by passing the House Energy Environment and Natural Resources Committee by an 8-4 vote on February 11. We couldn’t have done this without your support! This bill—also known as “Roxy’s Law” in recognition of Roxy, a dog who was strangled to death by a snare trap in 2018—would prevent thousands of wild animals and pets in the state from falling victim to needless suffering.
Now, your voice is needed to help pass HB 366 in the House Judiciary Committee. The Committee will hear the bill this Saturday, February 23. Trappers have been contacting the Committee so it’s crucial that they hear from you too!
Please act today by writing or calling key State Representatives on the Committee asking them to vote YES on HB 366. We also urge you to attend the hearing. Details below.
This legislation is a common-sense solution that will prevent a small minority of the population from endangering pets, wildlife and citizens with poisons and outdated, unnecessary traps on New Mexico’s shared public lands.
- Traps and poisons are cruel. Animals in traps may starve to death, succumb to exposure or dehydration, or even chew off their own limbs trying to escape. Poisons can cause an excruciating, slow death.
- Traps and poisons are non-selective. They kill non-target animals like cats, dogs and endangered species. Countless New Mexico residents have lost beloved pets to these practices.
- Non-lethal methods are more effective at protecting public health and livestock.
This bill still allows hunting on public lands and allows ranchers to use live cage traps to remove specific animals damaging crops, property or livestock.
Please contact key state representatives TODAY to urge their support for HB 366.
Speak up for the voiceless animals who need your help.
