Texas Residents: Galveston’s Unique Canids Need You
Canids on Galveston Island, Texas could hold the key to the recovery of critically endangered red wolves with recent research reporting high levels of red wolf ancestry in these individuals.
Unfortunately, the Galveston City Council is moving forward with a plan to develop a hotel and high density housing complex on 63 acres of the Island’s east end where a resident pack of these unique canids currently reside. The city’s plan will create a mega development with high density rental units, narrow streets and expected high volumes of traffic. This will displace the East Beach pack of canids, who harbor the greatest percentage of red wolf ancestry on the island.
Beyond their critical importance to red wolf conservation, these canids deserve to have a space to call home. Join us in urging the City Council to vote NO on this proposed mega development!
Here’s how to speak up for Galveston’s Canids:
- Galveston residents: Please attend the Galveston City Council Meeting on October 26th (5pm CT) to speak up in-person!
- Provide your testimony at 823 Rosenberg, 2nd Floor in Galveston Texas 77553 or provide your public comment virtually.
- Use these talking points to craft your testimony and remember there is a 3 minute time limit for all verbal testimony.
- Galveston residents: If you’re unable to attend the council meeting, you can submit an online comment here by tomorrow October 26 by noon CT.
- Please keep comments concise: there is a 500 character limit on all public comments.
