Ending Wildlife Killing Contests in Michigan
What are wildlife killing contests?
Wildlife killing contests generally involve a day- or weekend-long contest promoting the indiscriminate killing of coyotes, foxes, raccoons, and other wildlife species with prizes awarded to the individuals who kill the most or largest individuals. Wildlife killing contests promote cruelty and disrespect towards wildlife, deplete lands of carnivores that are critical for natural processes, such as rodent control/disease prevention, and serve no conservation or management purpose.
The current viewing map displayed shows recent known wildlife killing contests in Michigan occurring from 2018 to those predicted for 2025. Click on each contest to learn more about which species are targeted, the organizer/host of these events, and pictures of animals killed during these events.
What we’re doing
Project Coyote cofounded the National Coalition to End Wildlife Killing Contests comprised of more than 60 national and state wildlife conservation organizations working together to bring an end to cruel and senseless killing contests nationwide. Together, we have successfully enacted prohibitions on killing contests in ten states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington.
We are working across Michigan to raise awareness of wildlife killing contests, with the goal of adding Michigan to this list of compassionate states that have banned these cruel contests.
Ways to Take Action:
- Raise awareness by sharing this page with other Michiganders and encourage them to take action!
- Are you a Michigander looking to take action for wild carnivores in your state? Email us at info@projectcoyote.org to learn more on how to take action for Michigan wildlife.
- Write a Letter to the Editor (LTE) and submit it to your local newspaper. Inform your fellow Michiganders and encourage them to support the bill to ban wildlife killing contests. Use these talking points and see tips on how to write LTEs here.
- Host a screening of Project Coyote’s Killing Games: Wildlife In The Crosshairs and Comfort Theory’s Wildlife Killing Contests, two award-winning films, and invite lawmakers and activists to attend.
