JESSICA BOCK

PROJECT COYOTE INTERN

Born in Medellín, Colombia, Jess had no lack of amazing opportunities to observe the natural world growing up. The fact that her parents are biology/herpetology professors meant that she had firsthand experience at field and lab work from a very young age. The fight for public understanding and acceptance of the ‘unloved’ and misunderstood animal, be it snakes, bats, insects or coyotes resonated with her as important and meaningful work.

When picking a college to attend Jess was drawn to College of the Atlantic (COA), a tiny school on the coast of Maine that encouraged a multidisciplinary approach to learning. Coyotes are expanding their range south but have not yet reached Colombia, so it was a new and exciting notion for Jess to see and live so close to these beautiful and interesting canines. COA is a school where students are encouraged to contemplate the interconnectedness of a wide array of disciplines. Every student graduates with a degree in Human Ecology but is free to carve their own path as they see fit.

For Jess, this meant finding a way to connect science and art for education and conservation purposes. Whether it be photography, video, traditional or digital art, graphic design or any other medium, the merit of art in visualizing and communicating science is invaluable.

For an internship Jess wanted to continue to practice these skills, and Project Coyote was an organization with which she was already familiar (and a huge fan). In her role as an intern, Jess Bock helps to create informational material, and is involved in other aspects of Project Coyote’s communication and art programs. Even after her internship concludes in August 2022, she will continue learning about coyotes and doing what she can to help them.

When not busy with homework, or watching coyotes eating apples off a tree on YouTube, you can find Jess going on adventures with her friends, facetiming with her family back home or reading a good book.
