Keeping it Wild:
Youth Education

NATURE'S NEXT GENERATION

Inspiring the Next Generation of Wildlife Advocates

Young people are our greatest hope for the future of our shared planet. However, it is essential to provide new generations with science-based information and inspire compassionate coexistence with our wild neighbors in order to dispel the misconceptions about wild carnivores that have persisted for generations and that have incited persecution of these species.

Our Solution

Project Coyote’s Keeping It Wild program educates the next generation of wildlife advocates about wild carnivores and coexistence, fosters respect and compassion for wildlife, and contributes to students’ environmental and scientific literacy. In a world with increasing climatic instability, declining biodiversity, and increasing threats to wild carnivores, it’s more important than ever to inform, inspire, and empower students to act conscientiously on behalf of their wild neighbors and our shared planet. Learning about wild carnivores, asking meaningful questions, and conducting careful investigations teaches students about broader issues including the interconnectedness of ecosystems, community, and public health. We provide educators with curricula and resources to teach about the important role that wild carnivores play in ecosystem health and how to live peacefully alongside wildlife.

TEACHING CURRICULUM

Grade Levels: Kindergarten through 8th grade

Humane education fosters empathy, respect, and compassion for all living beings and empowers youth to be creative problem solvers. This compassionate coexistence curriculum provides teachers with the tools needed to teach about North America’s wild carnivores, fostering empathy for these species while aligning with NGSS Core Teaching Standards.

Launched in 2025, these mini-units are open-access resources for educators to download and use. Each unit contains multiple lesson plans centered on foxes, coyotes, wolves, and other wild carnivores. Links to all needed teaching materials are provided within each module, along with options for extensions.
