The Colorado Senate Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee has agreed to hear testimony and vote on SB26-062, a bill to reduce the use of the most dangerous rodenticides in our state. Committee members need to hear from Coloradans now to know there is strong public support for this bill.
Introduced in January 2026, SB26-062 would prohibit the sale, use, and application of anticoagulant and other chemical rodenticides, as well as rodent glue traps, while still allowing use during public health emergencies.
The bill promotes non-chemical Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approaches that prevent rodent conflict rather than relying on poisons that harm far more than their intended targets.
Wildlife that naturally help regulate rodent populations—including owls, hawks, coyotes, foxes, bobcats, and mountain lions—are exposed when they consume contaminated prey. A Colorado Parks and Wildlife study found that 100% of sampled Denver-area coyotes had been exposed to rodenticides.
These poisons also put families at risk. Rodenticides are also a leading cause of pet poisonings in Colorado, with over 2,100 reported cases between 2020 and 2024. Nearly 70% of human rodenticide exposures nationwide involve children under six.
Committee members are reviewing SB26-062 now, and public input matters.
Urge the committee to support SB26-062 by calling or submitting your comments before February 19.
