MATT FRANCIS
PROGRAM ASSOCIATE
Matt is the director of Prescott Observatory and Dark Star Quantum Cosmology Research. He moved to Prescott, Arizona, to operate the private research facility after retiring from his career as a transmission electron microscopy (TEM) engineer. His research at Dark Star involves the study of animal consciousness and its relation to non-human observation of elementary particles. As a member of the Lowell42 committee at the Lowell Observatory, Matt makes public presentations that address the universal questions. In addition, Matt has contributed extensively to the Slooh Community Observatory public outreach program.
After photographing wildlife on a visit to Yellowstone in January 2018, Matt became an advocate for coyotes, wolves, wildlife and wild places. As a Project Coyote program associate, he played a key role in the passage of a town council resolution that condemns wildlife killing contests in Dewey-Humboldt, Arizona. Matt is a 27-year member of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.
Matt Francis appeared on Arizona PBS on Monday, May 20, 2019.
The Arizona Game and Fish Commission will consider a rule to ban animal killing contests in June.
A 30-day public comment period ended May 12 on a move to end contests where cash and prizes are awarded to those who kill the most or largest or smallest animal.
At least 40 such contests have been held in the state over the past two years. We’ll hear more from Joe Trudeau, Southwest advocate at the Center for Biological Diversity and Matt Francis, who is with Project Coyote.
