SCIENCE WITH INTEGRITY
Integrating Science and Ethics into Wildlife Policy

Government wildlife policies often overlook important interdisciplinary academic literature on wild carnivores, including ethological, physiological, social, ecological, and evolutionary scholarship, despite growing support for its inclusion. A holistic, scientific understanding of wild carnivores recognizes them as highly sentient, self-aware, cognitively advanced and extremely social, family-oriented, autonomous beings.
Wild carnivores are also intrinsically valuable in their own right, and intervening in their lives should require strict ethical and scientific scrutiny. To address the escalating threats to North America’s wild carnivores, a new approach is needed that integrates ethics, animal wellbeing, and the best available science. Consideration of the intrinsic value and interests of the individual animal—in addition to species preservation—is fundamental to furthering compassionate wildlife conservation.
