Texans: Help protect mountain lions!

Raise your voice to help advocate for Texas wild cats! Currently, mountain lions across Texas are hunted and trapped year-round without any limits, seasons, reporting, or management restrictions. This month, for the first time, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) will consider reforms to regulations related to mountain lion hunting and trapping.

Texans for Mountain Lions—a coalition of landowners, biologists, and organizations supporting the scientific management of Texas’ largest wild cat—has proposed a series of reform measures to protect Texas’ mountain lions and their crucial roles in bolstering biodiversity, supporting healthier ecosystems, and enhancing human communities.

Two reform measures are currently open for public comment. The first would ban canned hunting – the cruel and inhumane practice of capturing and later releasing a mountain lion to be pursued and killed. The second would institute a 36 hour trap check time. Texas does not currently have trap check requirements for mountain lions, which leaves animals potentially trapped for days or weeks until they succumb to dehydration or exposure to the elements.

The TPWD needs to hear from you on why these reform measures are needed to better protect our state’s treasured Mountain Lions from cruel, inhumane, and scientifically indefensible management policies. Thank you for joining us in speaking up for Texas mountain lions!
