Act Now: Montana Wants to Kill 500 Wolves

As the saying goes, if you give a greedy person an inch, they’ll take a mile. Tragically, this is how Montana’s Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) approaches wolf management. FWP recently proposed new rules for wolf hunting and trapping that would allow Montanans to kill 500 wolves in a single season—a 70% increase over the number of wolves hunted and trapped annually in Montana in recent years.

A law passed in 2021 directed FWP to reduce Montana’s wolf population. But it did not require FWP to take the extreme, illogical, and cruel measures the agency is now proposing. Shockingly, FWP is ignoring the findings of a study that it requested: that killing at the level proposed could wipe out the wolf population in several years.

FWP’s determination to decimate Montana’s wolf population would also cost taxpayers more by allowing individuals to kill more animals on a single purchased permit. Nor does the agency seem to care that it’s risking the lives of wolves from Yellowstone National Park, where they are legally protected, or that federal officials have warned Montana to stop its intense persecution of carnivore species like wolves and grizzly bears.

Together, we must pressure FWP to come to its senses and roll back its proposal to kill 500 wolves this season

The agency will discuss the proposal at its next meeting on August 21, during which the public can testify in-person or remotely. The public, including out-of-state residents, also has until August 4 to submit written comments.
