REFORMING WILDLIFE POLICY
Help us Transform Wildlife Governance

Most state wildlife agencies follow an outdated system of wildlife governance that promotes anthropocentric and biased wildlife policies that fail to recognize the intrinsic value and crucial ecological roles of wildlife—especially wild carnivores.
This model of governance is growing more out of touch with the broad public, who increasingly view wildlife as part of their social community. Despite these shifting public values, along with decades of advances in interdisciplinary science that support more inclusive policies, state wildlife agencies are stuck in a paradigm of old-school wildlife management that views wildlife exclusively as a consumptive resource for increasingly narrow hunting and trapping interest groups.
Agricultural interests disproportionately influence wildlife policies further, resulting in a predominantly lethal approach to conflicts. Despite the lack of scientific or ethical support for such policies, wildlife agencies consistently prioritize game species and hunting and trapping over the protection of wild carnivores and other ‘non-game’ species.

Our Solution
Project Coyote is working to reform state wildlife governance by aligning wildlife policy with a modern scientific and ethical understanding of ecological and animal well-being. This new approach will require a paradigm shift in how we view and value wildlife. We work to promote a compassionate, science-based, democratic, and transparent model of wildlife governance—one that values the scientific evidence of animal sentience and ecological contributions, public concern for animal protection, and the importance of wild carnivores in natural processes, especially in the face of biodiversity collapse and the impending climate crisis.
Through our network of state leaders, we work to reform wildlife commissions across the country, advocating for diverse representation among commissions of non-consumptive interest groups, lobbying for wildlife policies that are rooted in compassionate conservation, and shifting public values that increasingly value wildlife alive.
