Tell Congress: Co-sponsor the Human-Wildlife Conflict Reduction Act

A bipartisan bill would make nonlethal wildlife management permanent — help get it across the finish line.

Senators Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and Steve Daines (R-Mont.) have introduced the Human-Wildlife Conflict Reduction Act of 2026, bipartisan legislation that would permanently authorize and expand USDA’s Nonlethal Initiative.

This bill would replace our default reliance on lethal control of wild carnivores with proven, science-based tools like range riders, livestock guardian dogs, and electric fencing. It would fund direct technical assistance for ranchers, farmers, Tribes, and nonprofits, and build in ongoing monitoring to keep improving these strategies.

Nonlethal deterrents work, and they work better than lethal removal, which can destabilize pack structures and backfire into more conflicts with wildlife, not fewer. This legislation gives ranchers real support to protect their herds while keeping wolves, bobcats, coyotes, and other carnivores wild and alive.

The bill already has bipartisan cosponsors: Senators Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), and Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.). Now it needs momentum.

Add your name and urge your senators to cosponsor and pass the Human-Wildlife Conflict Reduction Act of 2026.
